All of you that have cats know that litter boxes are a huge deal for cats. They have to be clean and have enough litter at all times, so that the cats are happy and don’t pee elsewhere. And scooping litter out daily is really done quickly. But every now and thenĀ  you have to empty them completely. Now it says on my bag of cat litter that I should do it every 6 weeks. I did at first, but then I realized that’s too often, because the litter was still okay and I would throw it away too soon. So now I keep it longer and just add a few cups of litter every week and wipe the insides of the box with some toilet paper. And then when I see that is starting to smell and the litter feels a bit heavy when I scoop it, I change it completely. I use litter that looks a lot like sand, so you can tell when it is too old to use – it becomes a bit darker and damp.

But emptying those boxes is hard work! Like for real. I think both litterboxes have around 17 kg (37 pounds) of litter altogether, so to put that out is not as easy as it looks. I usually ask B. to help me and he does it right away. So then I wash them both in the bathroom, use a lot of detergent, dry them out and fill them up. A lot of the times you’ll see that the litter itself is not that bad, but the litterbox can smell. So if you see that the litter is still fine, you can just put it in a bag, clean the litterbox and than put the old litter in. Some cats are just clumsy or not careful enough so they pee on the walls instead of where they are supposed to!

And then Kim comes to see if I’ve done everything right. She a real inspector, I tell you. And she always checks the litterboxes after Fergie and Peggy use them, to make sure everything is in order.

What about you? Any litter box drama?

We all have dreams and one of my biggest ones is to have a really nice house one day that will be cat proof, as I like to put it. Meaning I’d have enough space to make it safe yet entertaining for my cats. So the other day I found this website of a Japanese couple that created a really wonderful home for themselves and their pets. Now, I wouldn’t go as over the top as them, but their home is a nice “idea box”. :)

And they have dogs too!

This photo was taken 15 minutes after midnight, because that is when we usually play, if I want to get some sleep. And the enthusiastic face on the photo is Fergie, having a ball with her “fishing” toy. Cat danglers are awesome toys, my cats really like them. And this way Fergie not only gets tired but exercises her legs as well. Although in that moment she was kind of just rolling around like a bear. :)

Which toys work best for you and your cat/cats?

Peggy is the first cat I adopted. The only cat I had before her was Fonzie, that I’ll write about one day. The thing with Peggy is that at the time I had no desire to adopt. Fonzie was in bad shape, battling kidney disease and she needed her space. But then I saw the picture of Peggy. This 6 month old, skinny and scared kitty, really afraid of people and just really gentle. She got me, I had to have her. Not for me, for her. I had enough space for her to adjust to people and for Fonzie to still have her space.

I tried to pet her the first time I saw her in her foster home and she immediately pretended to be dead. She would just lay in her bed, completely still and she wouldn’t look at any of us. She was just so afraid of people touching her head. The only area okay to stroke was right above the tail, but even that was scary.

Seeing that the foster home wasn’t the right place for her to blossom, me and B (the boyfriend) decided to go on with the adoption. A week later she was already with us.

Today exactly one year later she’s a different cat, she’s come a long way. She is still skittish, but more adjusted to different sounds and to us handling her. She likes it when we rub her belly, she talks to us and she is a more confident cat over all. But whatever happened to her before she was found will always stay with her and she will always be a gentle giant, always very nice and polite.

First picture of Peggy.

In her foster home, feeling better.

On her third day with us.

Pretty girl, all grown up.
